Known as the 'Paris of the South', Bordeaux is perfect for a short break as well as a great base for exploring the region. With as many vineyards as Germany and South Africa combined, it's simply a paradise for wine-lovers.

Passing through? Take a stroll through old Bordeaux and admire the sumptuous 17th, 18th and 19th-century houses. The bunches of grapes that decorate the neoclassical archways are symbols of wine trading.

Staying a while? A wine-tasting session is a must. Fans of Médoc, one of the region's specialities, can take a river boat to Médoc chateaux including Lynch Bages and Arsac. You can also enjoy a ramble around the contemporary sculptures in the gardens at Arsac and a peek at some paintings at Lynch Bages.
