Passing through? Wander through the delightful medieval lanes of Poitiers to the Palace of Poitiers. Originally home to the dukes of Aquitaine, it has largely been rebuilt over the centuries, but still contains a magnificent 13th-century Gothic great hall.

Visit one of Poitiers’ celebrated medieval churches, some of the finest examples of Romanesque architecture in France, such as Notre Dame la Grande, with its splendid 11th-century façade and intricate carvings, or the World Heritage Site of St Hilaire le Grand, on the pilgrim route to Santiago de Compostela.

The inside track... Step into a multitude of other worlds at Futuroscope, a multimedia, audio-visual theme park, just 10 km north of Poitiers. Attractions include exploring the Mystery of the Nile, discovering the undersea world in Deep Sea 3D and experiencing snowmobile thrills in the Lapland Express simulator.
